What is Maya Abdominal Therapy?
Maya Abdominal Therapy is a profoundly effective treatment for many problems, including PMS, menstrual pain and irregularity, infertility, uterine prolapse and urinary incontinence. It offers an excellent health maintenance tool and preventive care for these conditions as well.
Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (ATMAT)
These techniques are founded on ancient practices of external abdominal massage which gently guide the organs back to their optimal position, thereby improving the flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses and chi (energy) through the abdomen. Increased flow restores balance and allows the body to heal. To learn more about Dr Arvigo and the traditional roots of Maya Abdominal Therapy, please visit www.arvigotherapy.com.
Uterus at the Center of Healing
A woman’s uterus is made to move and be responsive to the changes of our lives. She sits behind the pubic bone, in front of the rectum and leaning slightly over the bladder. She is supported by the pelvic floor muscles and the vaginal wall with space to grow through each menstrual cycle. She is tethered by 4 sets of ligaments, which stretch to accommodate a growing baby. And because of her flexibility, she is fairly easily bumped out of place – by an accident or pelvic injury, habitual one-sided activities, heavy lifting, multiple pregnancies, sedentary lifestyle… just life. The Maya people – and many other indigenous cultures around the world – understood this. Their healers believed that if her center was off center, her entire being was effected. In ancient times, no healing session was complete without abdominal massage, and the people knew to ask for it.
Arvigo Techniques for Self-care
One of my favorite aspects of ATMAT is the emphasis on self-care. During your first session, I take an extensive health history and do a physical assessment. There is a full treatment and then you learn to do the massage on yourself… for yourself. Practicing your self-care regularly, you can support the proper placement of your womb and nurture her toward health and well-being. You can know when she needs attention.
Abdominal Massage to Aid Digestion
ATMAT is a full abdominal massage. Tension in the upper abdomen is released and circulation enhanced, thereby decreasing digestive difficulties of all kinds. Organs in the pelvic bowl a re-placed, improving urinary problems as well as constipation. Again we have this emphasis on self-care. The more you do your work at home, the faster your improvement will be.
Wisdom of Traditional Herbal Remedies
In many cases I will suggest remedies in addition to the massage. These include castor oil packs, herbal formulas, vaginal steams, and variations on the traditional belly-wrap called a faja. As a certified Arvigo practitioner, I am trained in the use of all these remedies.
Pregnancy and Postpartum Recovery
Maya Abdominal Massage is extremely beneficial for pregnancy and for postpartum recovery. As a midwife, I have included this work in my prenatal appointments for years. Benefits include improved digestion and absorption of nutrients, decreased aches, pains and edema, increased relaxation, better sleep and a deeper sense of connection with baby. Ideal structural alignment in the pelvis, optimal positioning of the baby and increased flow of oxytocin which the massage supports all help facilitate a smooth and efficient labor and birth when the time comes. After birth, it is extremely important to re-align the uterus, and keep her centered and lifted. This treatment helps tone the pelvic floor, discouraging uterine prolapse and urinary incontinence. After a cesarean delivery, the massage can also help break up adhesions and reduce scar tissue.
